Banana Boxes are an ideal container for an aid box. They are normally discarded by supermarkets when empty so they are usually pleased to let you have them and the size is just about right to contain a good selection of aid.
A Food Aid Box should contain: Flour, Rice, Macaroni (Pasta), Marmalade, Conserves, Margarine, Oil, Dry Vegetables.
A Hygiene Aid Box should contain: Soap, Detergent, Nappies (Children's and Adults), Shampoo, Washing Up Liquid.
When preparing an aid box you should remember that these boxes are taken twice a year, usually at Easter and September. The contents need to be dated to take account of the possible delay in shipping and then for at least six months for the eventual users.
A hygiene box can contain items other than those shown on the minimum requirement list. As you can see from the picture alongside, all sorts of useful items can be included such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorants, and basic cosmetics.
Your school or college may wish to become involved by asking students to donate items and make up aid boxes that way. There is a Hope and Aid DVD available showing the documentary made by a convoyer during a recent trip to Kosovo. If your teacher would like a FREE copy of this DVD then please click on the link alongside and provide the details of where you would like it posted.
Apart from the much needed aid boxes the charity often gets asked if it can supply other items that may help a group to become more self sufficient or simply to make life a little bit more interesting for these very poor and deprived people. Items such as sewing machines have been taken on several previous convoys for some of the women's groups to make things and alter clothing. Please visit our WISH LIST page to see what is on the current list and if you would like to donate suitable items you should either contact someone in your nearest Hope and Aid Direct Members Group or send an email and we will get someone to make contact with you.
